Hollywood loves sequels. There are reasons for that but the most obvious one is: People already know the tone and what it is. If they loved the first part, the second part must be good…
*
Well – the only problem here is that sometimes filmmakers don’t deliver on the front, that won fans over in the first part. This is of course not always the case – movies like the original Star Wars Trilogy and the Lord of the Rings don’t fall into this trap and one could argue that Pirates of the Carribean 2+3 where actually truly watchable.

So what about „A QUIET PLACE 2“. Well …

What it failed to do
I think there will be some plot holes maybe somewhere, but I wasn’t able to find something that was significant – but I am normally not the best person in spotting those. What really struck me was a feeling of a) unfulfilled potential and b) missing, strong theme.
*
My feeling of unfulfilled potential comes mainly from the lack of introduction of the story world. A lot of questions remain open? How did all of this happen? What about the military? (especially this last point was kind of striking – because they would surely not give up without a fight – but where did they fight?) What was also unfulfilled potential was the missing of a strong theme …
*
Right now, I can’t even recall what the theme was. While the first part was a monster in the house drama about family, survival and the overcoming of impossible odds, the second one meanders around – it seems to give us a statement about what is right and wrong. But it mostly is carried away by the plot and the story world – unfortunately failing (a little bit) at both.

What if managed to do
But: It was still arguable a good watch. Why? Well they brought in characters, again they managed to build crazy moments of suspense and introduced new worldbuilding concerning the monster. The first scene is a retrospective and has this amazing, silent quality to it, which makes us understand that they truly embraced the quiet place – even before it was quiet. Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds, Cillian Murphy and Noah Jupe are definitely killing it. The sound design and mixing remains a role model for every filmmaker. The Cinematography is ABSOLUTLY gorgeous. And the story DOES take twists and it is kind of hard to predict what is gonna happen in a lot of places throughout the movie – and I mean that in a good way, not as in „this is so random, whatever!“ We do get to see very, very nice locations which I am not gonna spoil here. But the production design is on point … wait for it!
*
On the writing level the most significant achievement is probably the scare moments and the setting up of symbols (like the Vault). Also the decisions that they make story building wise when it comes to the end of the movie are appreciated.

Conclusion
I think, that A Quiet Place 2 is definitely an entertaining watch – especially if you like to watch movies that makes you want to hide behind a chair and cover your ears (in a good way, not because it is so bad … like Cats). I believe it is a worthy follower to the first movie but if they choose the make a third one, I would wish for myself a little bit more meaning and worldbuilding – although they are doing pretty good. Good enough to be able to still enjoy everything else – at least this was it for me.
