INHALT: Eine Gruppe von Besuchern verschlägt es während einer Fahrt mit einem Fahrgeschäft im Disneyland in einen echten Dschungel. Dort lauern gefährliche Tiere und Pflanzen, doch es ist auch das zu Hause von etwas Übernatürlichem. Frank, der Bootsführer, setzt alles daran, eine Forscherin und ihren Bruder zu einem Baum zu bringen, der angeblich heilende Kräfte besitzen soll. Doch auf dem Weg dorthin muss das Trio gegen gefährliche Wildtiere und eine deutsche Expedition kämpfen.

FILMBEWERTUNG (englisch/deutsch): If you are someone who loves adventures flare, a movie that is exciting but never terrifying and a good old romance you will stop to read right here and go over to your next cinema and watch this on the biggest screen you can find. If you read this and have not watched the trailer as always: Don’t watch it, you will be spoiled heavily. Here is a bit of music encapsulating the tone:

If you are immediately irritated by a single plot hole, hate it when VFX and the laws of physics have a scrap for who got the upper hand or have absolutely a problem with Disney’s usual male disempowerment agenda (which you will not encounter almost at all after the 1st Act) then you might probably save yourself the time and money.

This is a movie for people who want to have an enjoyable evening, enjoy the amazing soundtracks by James Newton Howard and gaze at wonderful sets that seem to have fall straight out of Disneyland (literally here is the IMDb Logline: Based on Disneyland’s theme park ride where a small riverboat takes a group of travelers through a jungle filled with dangerous animals and reptiles but with a supernatural element.) then you are in for an enjoyable ride full of action and snarky and sometimes purposefully flat humour with a cute romance at the end made special by a plot twist I will not spoil here. The whole package feels like a light hearted mix of Pirates of the Caribbean, the new Jumanji.

I have no major criticism to speak out to any department mainly because this movie knows what kind of thing it is supposed to be and all departments pull on the same string to make it happen which I guess is not only a compliment to the Head of Departments but also to the director Jaume Collet-Serra.

Now I also have to admit, there is a good amount of VFX in this movie but I personally don’t have a problem with this unless it is badly executed or is just there for show of. And in this case the movie was a funny physics defying (wait for the thing coming out of the Jungle Waters around the moment the story really kicks off) spectacle and therefore I say: Fair game.

Just don’t get this movie mixed up with the real world all too much. But I guess this is self evident.

The Rock and Emily Blunt both come off as you would expect them: They are pro’s. Of course this is not a movie for deep plots but considering the genre it does have a few moments and movements in the story that both of them execute as far as I am concerned genuinely with heart. The Rocks flat jokes dead pan expressions spice everything up a bit and Emily is a soldier, as she always is (one of the things I like about her performances).

Unfortunately I do have to mention that the “men were evil you know” theme pops up again (women were not allowed to be part of associations (although she is pretty much better than everyone else), her gay brother being kicked out his family etc.) as it is unfortunately standard for modern Disney productions but I was able to live with it rather well after the 1st Act as the filmmakers allowed her to fail at a few things herself instead of making her invincible (Captain America) or making the character fully ABOUT this topic (Charlies Angles). But given the fact that all characters had arcs and mostly concerned themselves with everything else I was able to just give a shit – the Rock obviously also helps with that.

Now without drawing this all too long because you probably already know what you need too to make a judgement on if you should go ahead. I just want to say something that might not factor into your decisions:

Although you could say that many parks like EuropaPark or Disneyland have a certain kitsch about them I find them usually rather beautiful. I know that it does not present the real world with all its grey tones and struggles but this is precisely why such movies should exist as well, to lift ourselves out of that complex reality and see ourselves going on an adventure in unapologetically beautiful places, in straight forward adventures and with significant others. This film is with all it does not a movie that will plot twist you as hard as Fight Club because most of the time you probably can already guess where it is going but this is not the point: The point is being there for the journey.

PS: Thank you Disney for not remaking worse what was once better or supporting concentration camps this time … so sad what this company has come to. But I do not want to denigrate the creation of the filmmakers.

PSS: Shoutout to Glenn Ficarra and John Requa the duo known from films like Focus for delivering a compact storyline with minimal contrivances and themes that fit together in a satisfying way. Good job fellas.

Wenn du jemand bist der Abenteuer Flair liebt, ein Film der aufregend aber nicht gruselig ist und eine Lovestory hinein gewoben dann solltest du jetzt aufhören zu lesen und dich um Kinokarten kümmern denn klarer Fall dieser Film ist etwas für die große Leinwand und Surround Sound. Wenn du das hier liest und den Trailer noch nicht gesehen hast – wie immer – das dann nicht tun denn es gibt heftige Spoiler. Hier ist stattdessen ein bisschen Musik was das Gefühl des Films trifft.

Wenn du sofort von einem Loch im Plot gestört wirst, du es hasst wenn Computereffekte und die Gesetze der Physik im Kampf liegen oder du ein starkes Problem mit den üblichen Disney Gender Agenda hast (welche du nach dem ersten Act nicht mehr viele antreffen wirst) dann kannst du dir hier Geld sparen.

>deutsch< Das ist ein Film für euch die ihr einen angenehmen Abend haben wollt, einen wie immer ausdrucksstarken James Newton Howard Soundtrack genießen und die wunderschönen Sets bestaunen wollt die so aussehen als kämen sie aus dem Disneyland (bloß besser) (die Logline auf IMDb sagt wörtlich: Ein Film basierend auf einem Disneyland Theme Park Ride in dem ein kleines Flussboot eine Gruppe Reisender in einen Dschungel gefüllt von gefährlichen Tiere und Reptilien bringt aber mit übernatürlichen Elementen). Dann ist das etwas für euch – wenn ihr eine Achterbahnfahrt voller Humor (und natürlich auch jeder Menge flacher Witze) und einer süßen Liebesgeschichte besonders gemacht durch einen Plottwist den ich nicht verraten werde mögt. Das ganze fühlt sich in etwa so an wie eine Mischung aus Piraten der Karibik und dem neuen Jumanji.

Ich habe kein wirkliche Kritik auszugeben für eines der Departments hauptsächlich weil der Film weiß was er sein soll und alle ziehen am selben Strang um das hinzubekommen und in dem Sinne ist das wohl nicht nur ein Kompliment an die Head of Departments aber auch an Regisseur Jaume Collet-Serra.

Jetzt muss ich natürlich zugeben dass darin ein gutes Maß an Computereffekten vorkommt aber ich persönlich hab kein Problem damit solange es nicht schlecht ausgeführt ist oder nur zum Angeben dient. Und in diesem Fall für dieses Physik wiederlegende (wartet ab was da aus den Flusswassern des Dschungels auftauchen wird) Spektakel sage ich: Ist total okay.

Nur nicht diesen Film mit der echten Welt vermischen … so verhalten sich Tiere und der Dschungel nicht … aber ich gehe davon aus dass das selbstverständlich ist.

The Rock und Emily Blut liefern beide ab wie ich erwartet hatte: Sie sind halt Profis. Natürlich ist das kein Film für super tiefgründige Plots aber wenn man das Genre bedenkt gab es da doch ein paar Momente die mit Herz gespielt wurden. The Rocks flache Witze und Mienenspiel ist das Gewürz und Emily eine Kämpferin (so wie wir das von ihr kennen).

Unglücklicherweise muss ich auch das “Männer waren böse” Thema ansprechen was sich in unterschiedlichen Arten gezeigt wie zum Beispiel u.a. durch die Assoziation die sie auslachte und gezielt Ausschloss. An sich kein Problem bloß wer Disneys Agendas und Filme länger verfolgt fühlt sich hier eventuell angeödet. Aber nach dem ersten Akt verschwindet das meiste dieser Symptome und die Filmemacher haben ein paar Dinge zurecht gerückt die normalerweise solchen Filmen zur Last fallen so wie unbesiegbare Helden (Captain Marvel) oder das der ganze Film sich um das Thema dreht (Charlies Angles) und dabei komplett an der Zielgruppe vorbei rauscht.

Auch wenn man Parks wie Disneyland oder Europapark für etwas kitschig halten kann muss ich doch persönlich sagen ich denke das was hier von der Disneyland Inspiration durchscheint ist ganz hübsch. Es ist nicht die reale Welt mit all ihren Grautönen und Verhängnissen aber das ist genau warum solche Filme existieren, um einen heraus zu nehmen aus der Realität die wir allzu gut kennen um auf ein Abenteuer zu gehen in wunderschönen Orten. Dieser Film was mit allem was er tut natürlich nicht darauf aus ist Plot Twists wie Fight Club zu liefern und meistens wirst du dir schon ungefähr denken können wohin die Reise geht … aber das ist der Punkt: Es geht ums dabei sein und darum, wie es tatsächlich geschehen wird.

In diesem Sinne: Habt eine gute Zeit im Dschungel.

PS: Danke an Disney das ihr diesmal euch etwas Neues habt einfallen lassen anstatt eure alten Filme neu zu machen und das ihr diesmal keine Konzentrationscamps gedankt habt … schade wozu diese Firma geworden ist. Aber ich will nicht die ausgezeichnete Arbeit der Filmemacher schmälern.
