Fünf Jahre sind seit unserem letzten Interview mit Matt Cusson vergangen – und sein Erfolg wächst weiterhin stetig. In dieser Zeit veröffentlichte er nicht nur sein erstes Album, sondern entwickelte auch seine musikalische Ausdruckskraft und seine Stimme eindrucksvoll weiter. Dabei begeisterte seine außergewöhnliche Stimme bereits von Beginn an auf höchstem Niveau.
Sowohl seine gefühlvolle Stimme als auch seine tiefgründigen Texte berühren nachhaltig und erzeugen eine besondere Atmosphäre, die lange nachklingt. OBZ: Es ist jetzt etwa fünf Jahre her, das wir Sie interviewt haben. In den letzten fünf Jahren ist sicherlich so einiges passiert? Erzählen sie…
MATT: I wouldn’t know where to start! The debut album was out in 2008, it won several awards, such as The John Lennon Songwriting Award, I won the Agape Best New Artist and my song „One of Those Nights“ won The 2009 Maxell Song Of The Year. The song is also now up for a Oasis Contemporary Jazz Award and is a finalist in the Billboard Songwriting Contest. Other than that, been touring tons with my own shows as well as being a part of some Brian McKnight tours and the International 2010 „Man In The Mirror“ Michael Jackson Tribute Tour. I’ve had the pleasure of playing with a whole lot of artists like Stevie Wonder, James Taylor, Smokey Robinson, The Roots, and a whole lot of others. It’s been a pretty amazing 5 years!
OBZ: Hat sich in der Zeit auch Ihre Musik stark verändert?
MATT: I think I’m just trying to write a better song today than I did yesterday. There will be more energy on the 2nd record. More up tempo stuff along with the ballads. I always just want my craft to continue to grow.
OBZ: Sie haben Ihr erstes Album veröffentlicht. Wie war die Resonanz Ihrer Fans? Und ist ein zweites Album schon in Planung? Können Sie uns was darüber erzählen?
MATT: The first album was released independently and after the awards it won and the amount it sold, it recently got picked up by Spectra Records and will be re-released soon. The fans and friends have really been amazing and everyone seems to have a different favorite song which is great! The 2nd album will be edgier. I’m just writing and creating without restricting myself to certain styles, I have a few pop tunes, a few jazz tunes, couple r&b songs, whatever comes will come. It will definitely be more up though, have bigger arrangements and more energy!
OBZ: Dank Amazon und iTunes können Sie Ihre Musik auch bequem übers Internet im MP3-Format anbieten. Legen Sie trotz allem noch wert auf den Verkauf von CDs und Vinyls. Gibt es Ihre Album auf Vinyl? Und was hat der klassische Tonträger (CD/Vinyl) für eine Bedeutung für Sie?
MATT: Vinyl is still great for the DJ’s who use it still. It’s a great way to keep that vintage sound. My stuff hasn’t been released on Vinyl but you never know what may happen down the road.
OBZ: Wie wichtig sind Internetplattformen wie Facebook oder YouTube für Sie? Und warum?
MATT: Incredibly important especially to the independent artists. These days you can record an album in your home, then put it out to the world by yourself. Facebook and Youtube are amazing ways to promote yourself, gain fans, just get your stuff out there. With these tools you can be connected to the world by just opening a laptop. You can be seen, heard, and sell songs to not only fans, but companies who can further your music even more.
OBZ: Wann können wir Sie mal in Deutschland begrüßen? Werden Sie in nächster Zeit mal in Deutschland auftreten?
MATT: I really want to make it there soon! I’ve been really close and flown through Germany several times, just gotta make it out of the airport and in front of a piano in Germany some time soon!
